Sister Mary Emeric Pitonyak, native of Trenton

 A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated March 1 in McAuley Hall Health Care Center, Watchung, for Mercy Sister Mary Emeric Pitonyak who died Feb. 25. She was 87.

Sister Mary Emeric, the former Elizabeth Pitonyak, was born in Rossiter, Pa., and was raised in Trenton. She attended Sts. Peter and Paul School and Cathedral High School, both in Trenton.

She entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1947 and later received a bachelor of science degree in elementary education from Georgian Court University, Lakewood, and a master’s degree in education from Seton Hall University, South Orange.

As an educator, she served in several New Jersey schools including St. Joseph School, Keyport, and Holy Cross School, Rumson, both in the Trenton Diocese.

Sister Mary Emeric was predeceased by her parents Imrich and Mary Pitonyak, a sister, Sister Evelyn Pitonyak, and brother, Andrew Pitonyak, Sr.

Sister Mary Emeric is survived by her sister, Helen Pitonyak; nephews, Andrew, Jr. and Thomas Pitonyak; many cousins and members of the Sisters of Mercy in the Mid-Atlantic Community.

Burial was in St. Mary Cemetery, Trenton.

Memorial contributions may be made to Sisters of Mercy Mid-Atlantic Community, 1645 Highway 22, Watchung, N.J. 07069.
