Sister Mary Doris Wiswell, co-founder of Emmaus House, Ocean Grove

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Jan. 14 in Emmaus House, Ocean Grove, for Mercy Sister Mary Doris Wiswell who died Jan. 10. She was 85.
Sister Mary Doris was born in Mount Pleasant, S.C., to Margaret and Edward Wiswell. She received her early education in St. Joan of Arc Elementary School, Fairview, N.J., and Camden Catholic High School, Camden. She received a bachelor’s degree in physical science from Georgian Court University, Lakewood, and was granted a master’s degree in chemistry from Brown University, Providence, R.I.
Sister Mary Doris entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1946 and served in the ministries of teaching, as an administrator, spiritual director and community leader. She was also the co-foundress, vice president and treasurer of Emmaus House, Inc., a holistic treatment center for women religious.
Sister Mary Doris had been involved in the education of religious congregations regarding alcoholism, addictions and on-going renewal in the United States, Canada and Central America. In 1989, she was invited to attend the Soviet-American Conference on Alcoholism held in Moscow. In 1991, she was invited to participate in the Sixth International Conference at the Vatican which was entitled, “Contra Spem in Spem – Drugs and Alcohol Against Life.”
Sister Mary Doris is survived by a brother, sister-in-law, nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
