A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated April 24 in Assisi House, Aston, Pa., for Franciscan Sister Mary Ann Shambo who died April 19. She was 78.

A member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia for 55 years, Sister Mary Ann (formerly Sister Judith Marie) entered the congregation in 1953 and professed her first vows in 1956. She held a bachelor’s degree in secondary education and a master’s degree in spirituality and theology. Ministering primarily in education, parish ministry and social services, Sister Mary Ann served for 30 years in the Diocese of Camden; for 11 years in the Diocese of Allentown; for seven years in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, and in the Trenton Diocese, she served as the provincial for the former St. Anthony Province in Trenton from 1989 to 1993.

Sister Mary Ann is survived by a brother, nieces, a nephew, cousins and her Franciscan family. Burial was in Our Lady of Angels Cemetery, Aston.

Memorial donations may be made to the Sisters of St. Francis Foundation, 609 S. Convent Rd., Aston, Pa. 19014.
