Sister Mary Alphonsus Kennedy, 88

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Aug. 18 in Mount St. Mary, Immaculate Conception Chapel, Watchung, for Mercy Sister Mary Alphonsus Kennedy, who died Aug. 13 in Kindred Hospital, Rahway, at age 88. The former Catholic school educator and administrator was also an author and historian.

Born in Lincoln Park, in 1921, Sister Mary Alphonsus attended Mount St. Mary Academy and entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1946. She received a bachelor’s degree in English from Caldwell College and a master’s degree in English from The Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C.

She served as a faculty member at Mount St. Mary Academy, Watchung, and at Mount St. Mary College, Watchung; assistant principal of Holy Spirit High School, Absecon; council member of the Sisters of Mercy; teacher at St. Pius X High School, Piscataway, and director of development of alumnae at Mount St. Mary Academy.

In the Diocese of Trenton, she served as director of the Evening Division at Georgian Court University, Lakewood, from 1979 to 1985. In 2008, she published her book, “Mount St. Mary Academy – 100 Years – A Commemoration.”

Sister Mary Alphonsus is survived by one brother, one sister and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Burial was in Holy Redeemer Cemetery, South Plainfield.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mount St. Mary Academy, Sister Mary Alphonsus Kennedy Scholarship Fund, 1645 Highway 22, Watchung, N.J. 07069.
