Sister Mary Agnita Coakley, at 89

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated May 28 at 10:30 a.m. in St. James Church, Red Bank, for Mercy Sister Mary Agnita Coakley, who died May 23 at age 89. Msgr. Philip Lowery, pastor, was principal celebrant of the Mass.
Born in 1920, Sister Mary Agnita was the daughter of James and Anna Coakley. She entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1943; made her first vows in 1946, and her final profession in 1949. Sister Mary Agnita earned a bachelor of science degree in elementary education from Georgian Court University, Lakewood, and taught in schools in New Jersey. In the Trenton Diocese, she taught in St. Joseph School, Trenton, from 1953 to 1955; St. Paul School, Burlington, from 1964 to 1969, and St. Charles Borromeo School, Cinnaminson, from 1969 to 1971.
From 1975 to 1978, she served on staff in Mount St. Mary Motherhouse in Watchung.
From the classroom, she stepped into library work and was the librarian in two Metuchen Diocesan parishes. She also served on staff in a school in the Newark Archdiocese.
She retired to St. James Convent, Red Bank, in 2005.
Sister Mary Agnita is survived by two sisters, Mercy Sister Mary Peter Coakley of McAuley Hall, Watchung, and Joan Holton of South Amboy, as well as several nieces and nephews.
