Sister Martina Therese Butalla was educator in Trenton Diocese

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated July 24 in Our Lady of Angels Convent Chapel, Aston, Pa., for Franciscan Sister Mar tina Therese Butalla wh o died July 18. She was 86. Sister Mar tina Therese was b orn in En out, Pa. She entered the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia in 1944 and professed her first v ows in 1947. She earned a ba chel or of science degree in English from Villan ova Universit y and a master’s degree in educati on from Providence College, R.I. She ministered primarily in elementar y educati on but also ser ved for a time in b oth healthcare and eldercare.
In her many years of ministry, Sister Martina Therese served in the Trenton Diocese for 20 years, teaching in Immaculate Conception School, Trenton, from 1947-1950 and from 1968-1970; Holy Angels School, Hamilton, from 1951-1953, and St. Rose of Lima School, Freehold, from 1953-1956; 1964-1965 and from 1972-1981. In addition to the Trenton Diocese, she was also assigned to the Archdiocese of Philadelphia for 16 years; the Diocese of Harrisburg for 17 years, and also taught in other par ts of New Jersey as well as Alabama.
Sister Mar tina Therese is sur vived by a sister-in-la w, nie ces and her Franciscan family. Burial was in Our Lady of Angels Cemeter y.
Donations in her name may be made to the Sisters of St. Francis Foundation, 609 S. Convent Rd., Aston, Pa. 19014.
