Sister Marie Olivette Weiss, native of Trenton, longtime educator

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated July 27 in Assisi House, Aston, Pa., for Franciscan Sister Marie Olivette Weiss, who died July 24 at age 99.
Sister Marie Olivette was a member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia for 79 years and would have celebrated her 100th birthday in December.
The former Gertrude Mary Weiss was born in Trenton and was a member of Holy Angels Parish, Hamilton, which is now part of St. Raphael-Holy Angels Parish, Hamilton. A graduate of Cathedral High School, Trenton, she entered the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia in 1930 and professed her first vows in 1933. She held a bachelor of science degree in education and a master’s degree in science from Villanova University, Villanova, Pa.
Having served in the field of Catholic education on both elementary and secondary levels, Sister Marie Olivette served in the Trenton Diocese for 41 years. She taught in St. Anthony School, Hamilton, from 1945-1949 and McCorristin Catholic High School, Hamilton, from 1972-1989. From 1989-2007, she volunteered in the studies office in Trenton Catholic Academy, Hamilton, and then from 2007-2009, she served in the local house ministry in St. Anthony Convent, Hamilton.
Sister Marie Olivette’s ministry also included 24 years in the Diocese of Harrisburg, Pa., and seven years in the Diocese of Hartford, Conn. Additional teaching experience included schools in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, New Haven, Conn., and Egg Harbor in the Diocese of Camden.
Among family members who predeceased Sister Marie Olivette was her brother, Vincent A. Weiss, the founding editor of The Monitor, who died in 1992. She is survived by nieces, nephews and her Franciscan family.
Burial was in Our Lady of Angels Cemetery, Aston, Pa.
