Sister Marcia Marie Burger, former provincial secretary

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Dec. 9 in Assisi House, Aston, Pa., for Franciscan Sister Marcia Marie Burger, who died Dec. 3 at age 91.

Born in Lancaster, Pa., Sister Marcia Marie (Catherine Elizabeth Burger) entered the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia in 1937 and professed her first vows in 1939. She earned a bachelor’s degree in business education from Marywood College, Scranton, Pa., and a master’s degree in business education from the College of St. Rose, Albany, N.Y. She ministered in both elementary and secondary education and in congregational ministry in the Archdioceses of Philadelphia and Baltimore and in the Dioceses of Harrisburg and Trenton.

In the Trenton Diocese, she was provincial secretary for the former St. Anthony Province (New England, Harrisburg, Puerto Rico and the Trenton area) from 1980 to 1985 and from 1987 to 1990.

Additional ministry experiences included teaching in schools in Bally, Pa., and Roxbury, Mass.

Sister Marcia Marie is survived by a sister, a brother, many nieces, nephews and her Franciscan family.

Donations in her name may be made to the Sisters of St. Francis Foundation, 609 S. Convent Rd., Aston, Pa. 19014.
