Sister John Marie Stack, served in nursing ministry

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated March 2 in Assisi House, Aston, Pa., for Franciscan Sister John Marie Stack, who died Feb. 24. She was 81.

A professed member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia for 61 years, Sister John Marie entered the congregation in 1947 and professed her first vows in 1950.

Sister John Marie graduated from St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing in Baltimore and later earned both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nursing from The Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C. She ministered primarily in healthcare as a nurse, nursing supervisor, nursing instructor, director of nursing services and chaplain.

Sister John Marie began her 13 years of ministry in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, serving in St. Mary Hospital from 1967 to 1971. She ministered in St. Joseph Medical Center, Towson, Md., for 31 years from 1953 to 1964, and from 1982 to 2002. She also served in St. Francis Medical Center School of Nursing, Trenton, from 1971 to 1977 and from 1980 to 1981.

Sister John Marie is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, nieces, nephews and her Franciscan family.

Burial was in Our Lady of Angels Cemetery, Aston, Pa.

Memorial donations may be sent to the Sisters of St. Francis Foundation, 609 S. Convent Rd., Aston, Pa. 19014.
