A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Nov. 17 in St. Lucy Chapel of Villa Walsh, Morristown, for Filippini Sister Elizabeth Arcangeli, who died Nov. 14. She was 97. Msgr. Thomas N. Gervasio, diocesan vicar general and pastor of Our Lady of Sorrows-St. Anthony Parish, Hamilton, was principal celebrant and homilist. Burial was in Ave Maria Cemetery at Villa Walsh.

Born and raised in Watkins Glen, N.Y., Sister Elizabeth entered the Religious Teachers Filippini in 1937. She received her religious habit in 1938 and made her final religious profession in 1941. She was educated in St. Elizabeth College, Convent Station, where she earned a degree in French with a minor in English; Seton Hall University, South Orange, where she was awarded a master’s degree in English, and Fordham University in New York, where she received a degree in religious education.

Sister Elizabeth primarily served in the ministry of education, teaching at the junior high school and high school levels in New Jersey, Ohio, Maryland, Connecticut and New York. Schools where she served in  the Trenton Diocese included St. Joachim School, Trenton, 1945 to 1947; 1961 to 1964, and 1991 to 1992; Villa Victoria Academy, Ewing, 1949 to 1950; 1955 to 1959, and 1971 to 1972. She also served in St. Joseph by the Sea Retreat House, South Mantoloking, from 1985 to 1986; in Holy Innocents Parish, Neptune, where she was director of religious education and the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, from 1988 to 1990, and from 1995 to 2006, and Holy Trinity Parish, Long Branch, (now part of Christ the King Parish, Long Branch), from 1992 to 1995, and from 2006 to 2008.

In 2008, Sister Elizabeth retired to Villa Walsh and in 2015, became a resident of St. Joseph Hall, where she continued to teach Scripture classes to the sisters.

Sister Elizabeth was predeceased by her parents and three sisters, two of whom were also Filippini Sisters.
