Sister Clara Gallagher, taught in Monmouth County Schools

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated July 5 in the chapel of the Sisters of St. Francis of Penance and Christian Charity, Stella Niagara, N.Y., for Sister Clara Gallagher who died June 28 in St. Mary Hospital, Lewiston, N.Y. She was 83.

The former Cecilia Gallagher was born in 1927 in Buffalo, N.Y. She entered the Sisters of St. Francis of Penance and Christian Charity Sept. 1, 1946 at Stella Niagara, N.Y., and made her profession of vows Aug. 18, 1949.

She was a graduate of St. Ann School of Business, Buffalo, N.Y., in 1946. She earned a bachelor of science degree in education from Rosary Hill (Daemen College), Amherst, N.Y., in 1965, and a master’s degree from Fordham University, N.Y., in 1976.

Sister Clara served in a number of schools as a teacher, tutor and principal in the Dioceses of Trenton, Buffalo and Wheeling/Charleston, W.Va., as well as in South Carolina, Italy and in Tanzania.

In the Trenton Diocese she served two assignments in Our Lady of Perpetual Help School, Highlands, from 1951-1961 and Mater Dei High School as a math teacher from 1972-1984.

Predeceased by her parents, one brother and one sister, Sister Clara is survived by a sister and many nieces and nephews.

Burial was in Sisters’ Cemetery, Stella Niagara.

Memorial donations may be made to the Sisters of St. Francis Retirement Fund, 4421 Lower River Rd., Stella Niagara, N.Y. 14144.
