Sister Carmela Melucci, taught in two schools in Trenton Diocese

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Sept. 13 for Filippini Sister Carmela Melucci who died Sept. 11 in St. Joseph Hall, Morristown. She was 84.
Born in Muro Lucano, Italy, Sister Carmela entered the Religious Teachers Filippini Feb. 10, 1948 and received the religious habit Oct. 2, 1949. Following her arrival to America, she made her religious profession Aug. 31, 1952.
Sister Carmela was awarded a bachelor of science degree in elementary education from St. John College, Cleveland, Ohio; a master’s degree in Italian from Middlebury College in Vermont; a certificate in Spanish from Trenton State College (now The College of New Jersey), and was a Fullbright Scholar at the University of Perugia in Italy.
Sister Carmela taught in elementary schools in the Archdiocese of Newark and Baltimore, and in the Dioceses of Trenton, Scranton, Brooklyn, Cleveland, Ogdensburg and Camden, until 1976. In the Trenton Diocese, she ministered in Holy Trinity School, Long Branch, from 1956-1957, and Villa Victoria Academy, Ewing, from 1974-1976.
She then went on to teach high school, followed by serving on the faculty of several colleges, teaching languages in Assumption College for Sisters, Mendham; Fairleigh Dickenson University, Hackensack; Montclair State College (now Montclair State University), Montclair; County College of Morris, Randolph, and the College of St. Elizabeth, Convent Station. When Sister Carmela retired from teaching in 2005, she used her skills in sewing and in the culinary field in Villa Walsh, the mother house of the Religious Teachers Filippini
Sister Carmela is survived by five sisters, one brother and several nieces and nephews. Burial was in Ave Maria Cemetery.
