Sister Anne Powers, teacher, principal and pastoral associate

A Mass of Christian Burial was held March 11 in St. Mark Church, Sea Girt, for Mercy Sister Anne Powers, who died March 4. She was 80.

Born Aug. 23, 1930 in Perth Amboy, Sister Anne (the former Sister Mary Michaeline) attended St. Mary Grammar School and High School, Perth Amboy.

Sister Anne entered the Sisters of Mercy Sept. 8, 1948 and professed her perpetual vows March 9, 1954. She was a graduate of Georgian Court College, Lakewood, and Seton Hall University, South Orange, where she received a master’s degree in administration and supervision. Sister Anne served in schools in the Metuchen and Trenton Dioceses, including St. Joseph, North Plainfield, Holy Cross, Rumson, St. Mary, Bordentown, St. Elizabeth, Bernardsville, and St. Catherine, Middletown, where she was principal for 24 years.

Sister Anne’s most recent assignment was serving as pastoral associate of St. Mark Parish, from November, 1999 to January, 2010.

Sister Anne had a great love for animals, nature and the sea and enjoyed reading, music, dancing and her favorite sports teams were the Yankees, Giants and all Notre Dame teams.

Sister Anne is survived by one brother and sister-in-law; one niece; two nephews; one grandniece and three grandnephews.

Burial was in Holy Redeemer Cemetery, South Plainfield.

Memorial donations may be made to McAuley Hall Health Care Center, 1633 Highway 22 W., Watchung, N.J. 07069.
