Sister Agnes Bernadette Wagner was leader in building St. Catharine School, Spring Lake

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Oct. 29 in St. Joseph Villa, Flourtown, Pa., for Sister of St. Joseph Agnes Bernadette Wagner who died Oct. 24 at age 101.

Sister Agnes Bernadette entered the Sisters of St. Joseph from St. Joseph Parish, Hanover, Pa., Sept. 9, 1929 and was a teacher and director of religious education in the Archdioceses of Philadelphia and Baltimore and the Dioceses of Trenton, Harrisburg and Camden.

Sister Agnes Bernadette’s first mission was in the Diocese of Trenton, serving in the then young parish of St. Catharine/St. Margaret, Spring Lake, where she taught seventh and eighth grades in the basement of St. Margaret Church from 1931 to 1947. In 1947, Sister Agnes Bernadette was named principal, and several years later she was instrumental in helping to develop plans to build a new St. Catharine School.

Sister Agnes Marie took up residency in St. Joseph Villa Nov. 12, 1995 and continued in various pastoral ministries until her death.

She is survived by nieces and nephews and members of the Sisters of St. Joseph.
