Sign-ups for youth hoops league

The St. Francis Community Center, Long Beach Township, will host a recreational youth basketball league again this season.

The league is co-ed and open to children 8 to 14 years old who are in third through eighth grades.

Registration and a parent orientation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 14 and Oct. 21. Orientation sessions will begin at each hour and half-hour. One parent must attend the orientation in order to register his or her child.

Evaluation dates and times for the league include the following:

• Third and fourth grade: 4:30 to 5:15 p.m. Oct. 23 and 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. Oct. 24

• Fifth and sixth grade: 5:30 to 6:15 p.m. Oct. 23 and 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. Oct. 24

• Seventh and eighth grade: 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Nov. 18

Attendance at evaluations is mandatory in order for participants to be placed on teams.

Third and fourth graders, as well as fifth and sixth graders are tentatively scheduled to be placed on teams in mid-November. Games will begin Dec.  12.

Seventh and eighth graders will be placed on teams in early December, and games will begin Jan. 8.

The league also offers private basketball lessons, with a strong focus on fundamentals, including proper shooting form and mechanics, offensive and defensive footwork, ball handling and passing. Appointments can be made through the Recreation Department.
