The Mercer County Federation of Holy Name Societies held its 56th annual Msgr. Richard T. Crean Memorial Mass and Scholarship Awards Breakfast March 18 in St. Raphael Church, Hamilton. Msgr. Crean was rector of St. Mary of the Assumption Cathedral, Trenton, from 1934 until March 14, 1956, when he and two housekeepers lost their lives in the fire that destroyed the cathedral and adjacent chancery and rectory. Since 1956, the federation has kept the memory of Msgr. Crean’s pastoral work alive through its sponsorship of the annual memorial Mass and breakfast. Proceeds from the breakfast assist in the financing of scholarships to Catholic high school students who continue to pursue a higher education. Msgr. Crean was spiritual director of the Mercer County Federation of Holy Name Societies from its inception in 1940 until his death. This year’s scholarship recipients were Carlie Schwartz of Trenton Catholic Academy, Hamilton, and Ryan Persichilli,of Notre Dame High School, Lawrenceville. In this photo, Schwartz, pictured left, and Persichilli, at right, are congratulated by Msgr. John K. Dermond, federation moderator and diocesan judicial vicar, and Bob Zotta, federation president.
