Bob Zotta, president of the Mercer County Holy Name Federation, presents the Msgr. Richard T. Crean Scholarship, in the amount of $1,000, to Carlie Schwartz. Schwartz is the salutatorian for the Trenton Catholic Academy Class of 2012 and plans to attend The College of New Jersey in September. Msgr. Crean was rector of St. Mary of the Assumption Cathedral, Trenton, from 1934 until March 14, 1956, when he and two housekeepers lost their lives in the fire that destroyed the cathedral and adjacent chancery and rectory. Since 1956, the federation has kept the memory of Msgr. Crean’s pastoral work alive through its sponsorship of an annual memorial Mass and breakfast. Proceeds from the breakfast assist in the financing of scholarships to Catholic high school students who continue to pursue a higher education.
