The Filipino community of St. Raphael-Holy Angels Parish, Hamilton, will hold its sixth annual Santacruzan celebration May 27 beginning with a Holy Mass at 1:30 p.m. The traditional celebration honors the Blessed Virgin Mary and is the conclusion of the Flores de Mayo (May flowers) observation at the parish.
The 1:30 p.m. trilingual Mass, to be celebrated in English, Tagalog and Spanish, will be followed by a procession beginning at 3 p.m. on parish grounds with many participants in traditional dress and others dressed as sagalas, or angels. The event will continue with a 4 p.m. semi-formal dinner dance and presentation of the sagalas. Proceeds will benefit the projects and needs of the Filipino community and the parish.
The Santacruzan celebration was originally introduced to the Philippines by Spaniards. In addition to honoring the Virgin Mary, it commemorates the discovery of the Holy Cross in Jerusalem by Queen Helena and her son, Constantine the Great.
General admission tickets are $30 and children ages 11 and under are admitted free. Tickets may be purchased at the event. For further information, call Norma McCoy at 609-238-9362, or Father Gene Daguplo at 848-448-5187. St. Raphael-Holy Angels Parish is located at 3500 South Broad Street, Hamilton.
