The annual Loving Life Logo Contest is now accepting entries for its annual competition, which carries the grand prize of an Apple laptop and the chance to create the logo used for Respect Life programs for the next year.

The contest is open to high school students living in or attending school in Monmouth, Ocean, Mercer or Burlington Counties, who create an original computer-generated or hand-drawn logo bearing the words “Loving Life 2013.”

Donna Goodwin, coordinator of the diocesan Respect Life Ministry, said that the contest is an important part of annual programming.

“The logo is used as a recognizable brand for the diocesan Respect Life Ministry for the entire year,” she said, adding that past logos have been included on the masthead of the Loving Life newsletter, as well as on shirts and pennants.

Submissions, including a signed contest release agreement, are due by Nov. 30 and can be submitted to [email protected], or mailed to the Department of Pastoral Care, Respect Life Ministry, 701 Lawrenceville Road, Trenton, NJ 08648.

Five finalist logos will be chosen and posted on the Respect Life Ministry webpage www.dioceseoftrenton.org/respectlifeministry for viewers to vote for the eventual winner.

“The contest is meant to raise pro-life awareness in high school students throughout the diocese,” said Goodwin. “Through this contest we are able to reach out in a special way to young people to allow them to become involved and feel some ownership for our respect life program.”

The logo, Goodwin added, reflects the students’ understanding of God’s gift of life, and employs their creative skills as they “become more cognizant of our Catholic teaching that God created us in his image and that human life is sacred from the moment of conception to natural death.”

Friends, classmates and family members of students selected as finalists are drawn to the site and learn more about pro-life information upon visiting, Goodwin noted. “This is a great way to outreach to everyone and raise pro-life awareness in people outside of our Church community.”

Goodwin said that her favorite part of the annual contest is judging the entries, along with members of the diocesan Respect Life Steering Committee.

“I enjoy seeing the many original and creative logos submitted by our talented high school students,” she said.

Goodwin added the importance of engaging youth in the ministry.

“It is important to get young people involved in living out this great teaching of the Church,” she said. “The Loving Life Logo contest raises awareness about the issue of respect for all human life. Only young people can impact their friends in the way that they can and influence other youth in ways that adults cannot.”
