In wake of the March 14 snowstorm that pummeled the East Coast, the American Red Cross is calling for all eligible blood and platelet donors to give in order to help offset the shortfall in donations.

More than 100 Red Cross blood drives across the eastern United States were canceled due to the extreme winter conditions that left much of the tri-state area under ice and snow. These cancellations resulted in a shortfall of nearly 4,500 blood and platelet donations on March 14 alone.

“The need for blood does not get a snow day,” said Alana Mauger, communications manager for the Penn Jersey Blood Services Region “For those in storm affected areas, please come out to donate when travel is safe. For those in unaffected areas, please help restock the blood shelves for patients now.”

March 23: 10 a.m. - 8 p.m., American Red Cross, 1540 W. Park Ave.

Bayville

March 24: 2 - 7 p.m., Faith Community United Methodist Church, 526 Route 9

Forked River

March 22: 2:30 - 7:30 p.m., Lacey High School, 73 Haines St.

Manahawkin

March 25: 10 a.m. - 3 p.m., Vitamin Shoppe, 237 Stafford Park Blvd.

March 31: 1 - 6 p.m., Moose Lodge, 120 Route 72

Toms River

March 30: 2 - 7 p.m., Silverton Fire Company, 15 Kettle Creek Road

All blood types are needed, organizers say. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in.
