Students, parents and friends of St. Charles Borromeo School began the 2017-2018 academic year Sept. 4 by lacing up their sneakers and dashing through their Cinnaminson campus during the eighth annual Rock ‘N Roll Back to School. Sponsored by the PTA board, the series of competitive and fun runs for all ages raised about $14,000 for the Catholic elementary school.

“This was the best weather we have had for years,” rejoiced Angie Wojnar, who estimated just under 500 of racers of all ages participated in the competition. Events included a recreational or serious run of 5-K in length; a one-mile fun run/walk for kids and families, or a 200-meter kids’ dash for the youngest attendees. Each child under 14 received a custom medal for their participation, and prizes were awarded to those fleetest of foot.

Beginning each April, the PTA board enlists the aid of area businesses and sponsors for donations of food, services or cash, and the event drew people from nearby towns such as Delran, Moorestown, even Philadelphia. “The whole community was involved,” Wojnar, a mother of four St. Charles Borromeo students, said. “This is a milestone event. Everyone knows it is back to school time and time to have fun.”

After a spirited rendition of “The National Anthem,” runners toed the line, eager to prove their speed and skill on the course to the scores of enthusiastic onlookers.  Professionally scored race finishes posted on the event’s webpage assured the runners’ prowess will be immortalized.

The event featured plenty of activities to keep both runners and non-runners amused. In addition to the races, a disc jockey spun tunes, children enjoyed having their faces painted or leaping in a moon bounce house, a caricaturist drew portraits, and food vendors kept all satisfied. “We make it family-friendly, fun for everyone,” Wojnar said.
