The pouring rain could not prevent more than 100 students in Red Bank Catholic High School, Red Bank, from lining the sidewalk on Broad Street to pay tribute to their town’s former police chief, who lost a battle with cancer in September.

On May 8, the local chapter of the Police Unity Tour, which includes a 300-mile bicycle ride taken by police officers to Washington, D.C., for National Police Week in the honor of fallen law enforcement officers, held a pre-tour ride through the streets of Red Bank prior to a ceremony in remembrance of the late Chief Stephen McCarthy.

In honor of the pre-tour, the students cheered along the riders as they passed the school, also holding a banner expressing support for the chief.

“We wanted to participate and honor Chief McCarthy and all law enforcement officers,” said Anne Byrnes, communications director for the high school.

Byrnes said that the school was notified of the ride, and that the students wanted to do something to recognize McCarthy and his dedication to the Red Bank community.

“He was very beloved to the town,” she said.

The pre-tour included officers on bicycle as well as many officers from surrounding towns who drove their cars along the route.

“I think that the police officers really appreciated it,” Byrnes said of the students’ presence. “They were clearly touched to see them all out there.”
