PTA gift advances technology in St. Veronica school

It was a day to celebrate technologically around St. Veronica School, Howell, Sept. 6, when seventh and eighth graders were each presented with a Surface RT from the school PTA. The PTA purchased 51 Microsoft Surface RTs for the two grades, now making it possible for each student to have his or her own tablet.
In addition to the Surface RTs, the school is equipped with 40 iPads, Elmos for class instruction, a full computer lab with 27 PCs, and computers and SMARTBoards in every classroom.
Funds for the Surface RTs were raised over the past two years through various PTA sponsored events including a gift auction, movie night and clothing drive.
According to Resurrection Sister Cherree Ann Power, the various forms of technology help students to better communicate with one another and has a critical role in their learning, especially in how they receive and process their information.
With modern technology, Sister Cherree observed: “The teacher is not the center of attention anymore, simply giving all the information to the students. Instead, the teacher is now a facilitator who sets goals and provides guidelines, resources, suggestions and support. The teacher and students work together and stimulate more active mental work on the part of students. Everyone is engaged in the learning process!”
