It was an evening of prayer, fellowship and celebration as the Mercer County Region of the Trenton Diocesan Council of Parent Teacher Associations gathered at St. Gregory the Great Academy, Hamilton Square, May 1 for its annual spring conference. Representatives from both the elementary and secondary school PTA boards met to share the good news of all the wonderful things happening in all the Catholic schools around the diocese.
“I am so pleased to be a part of this group that really does light the way for our children to pursue their faith and knowledge,” Marybeth Consiglio, Mercer County regent, said as she referenced the theme of the evening, “Lighting the Way through Faith and Knowledge.”
Centering his talk on Matthew’s Gospel (5:14) where Jesus stated, “You are the light of the world,” speaker Deacon Chuck Moscarello of St. Gregory the Great Parish, said, “Belief and faith are often hard to come by and we need to not put a bushel over our light; we need to tell stories and we need to let people know that miracles do happen, that people are affected by our prayers, and people are influenced by what we do and what we say.”
Deacon Moscarello acknowledged the gathering for being “in the business of teaching kids” then spoke on the importance of sharing the faith with their children especially by bringing them to Mass.
“Let your light shine to everyone; let them know you are proud to be a Catholic, and you are proud to know Jesus Christ and that you have a personal relationship with God; that’s the most important thing for us to do,” he said.
Trenton Diocesan PTA president Kathie Prihoda recognized fellow PTA members when she said: “I can’t tell you how much I admire your dedication and hard work on behalf of our children.”
Prihoda and JoAnn Tier, diocesan superintendent of schools, shared their experience of receiving the 2014 Distinguished Home and School Association Award by the National Catholic Educational Association. The award was given in recognition of the funding the Trenton Diocesan PTA provided for educators in the diocese to attend courses at Georgian Court University, Lakewood.
Tier explained that the partnership with Georgian Court University assists teachers in indentifying the preferred learning styles of the students in their classrooms and provided the educators the “skills sets necessary to meet all of our students’ unique learning needs.”
