Prayer In Play
July 29, 2019 at 12:37 p.m.
Dr. Robert H. Harris, left, St. Anthony of Padua Parish, Red Bank, and his guests, Michael Stewart (center) and daughter and son-in-law, Megan (partially visible) and Matthias Lowenberg, made a prayerful foursome at the second annual Bishop John C. Reiss Memorial Golf Outing June 3 at the Spring Lake Golf Club. They were among 78 golfers who joined Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M., pictured ready to take a swing, at the event which raised close to $70,000 to benefit the charitable trust for the aged, infirm and disabled priests of the Trenton Diocese. The proceeds will help the diocese maintain Villa Vianney, Lawrenceville, the priests’ retirement residence and provide for the healthcare needs of retired priests. The diocese has hosted an annual golf outing since 1996. Last year, the event was renamed in honor of Bishop Reiss who held the distinction of being the only native son of the diocese to serve as both auxiliary bishop and bishop in his home diocese. It was Bishop Reiss, who in Oct., 1995, dedicated Villa Vianney, first known as Villa Neumann. The facility first opened its doors to seven retired priests the following month. The diocese presently has approximately 53 priests in retirement who may chose to live in Villa Vianney, with family, in a parish rectory or on their own.
