Polar Plunge planned for January to benefit Catholic education

While the Jersey shore might not be a popular destination for swimming during the winter months, hundreds are expected to take the plunge for Catholic education this January.
For the ninth year in a row, the Ancient Order of Hibernians Patrick Torphy Division of Middletown will host a Polar Plunge for Catholic Education, designed to raise funds for schools in the Diocese of Trenton.
This year’s plunge will take place Jan. 11, with registration from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and the event launching at 1 p.m., when participants will charge into the brisk Atlantic Ocean. The event will be hosted at McLoone’s Pier Village, Long Branch, where an after party will entertain participants and the thousands expected to cheer them on as they embark upon the feat.
The event was first held in 2007, and has only expanded since then. Funds raised through the event are used for scholarships, financial aid, endowments and facility projects in Catholic schools. And because the AOH raises the funds necessary to host and manage the event, all money raised directly benefits participating schools.
The 2014 plunge saw 26 schools take part, though Jim Shaw, a member of St. Mary Parish, New Monmouth, and chairman of the event, hopes to see more participation this year.
“I am expecting another big turnout and hopefully some good collections by the schools,” he said. “We are looking forward to increased participation from schools.”
He said that one of the initial goals behind the event when it was first established was to raise a collective $1 million in funds for Catholic education. To date, he said, they have amassed nearly $700,000.
“Our goal was to hit $1 million, and we are getting there,” he said, though he explained that raising funds is one component of the annual program. “In one little way, it helps with the marketing of the schools, to build their image and to build that sense of family within that school.”
In the past few months, schools gave put together campaigns to raise funds, including special collections at parish Masses, fundraising sites and sponsorships. It is not too late to register to participate in the event, he added.
