Plans take shape for MLK Day of Service

Parishes, schools and agencies in the Diocese of Trenton will be continuing the tradition of joining in a national Day of Service named in honor of the civil rights figure Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

In 1994, Congress designated the Martin Luther King Jr. Federal Holiday as a national day of service, and charged the Corporation for National and Community Service with leading this effort. Taking place each year on or about the third Monday in January, the MLK Day of Service is the only federal holiday observed as a national day of service – a “day on, not a day off,” which calls for Americans from all walks of life to work together to provide solutions to the most pressing national problems.

The Day of Service dovetails with Catholic social teaching, and thus has been enthusiastically adopted by the Diocese. Numerous activities and service projects have been scheduled on or about Jan. 15, the national holiday. They include:

The Center for Faith Justice, Lawrenceville, will conduct a program Jan. 15 for 6th- to 12th-grade students. The all-day program will include opening and closing prayer services, reflection and witness time, and volunteering at a number of local non-profits located near St. Robert Bellarmine Co-Cathedral, Freehold, or St. Ann Parish, Lawrenceville. St. Ann Parish is full to capacity; those wanting to serve with St. Robert Bellarmine can contact Mare Ernesto at [email protected] or 609-498-6216.

The Rancocas Valley Clergy Association will host a dinner at Sacred Heart Parish, Mount Holly, at 6 p.m. Jan. 13. The dinner, provided by all the churches of Mount Holly, will be followed by a presentation from Chaplain Chaz Howard, University of Pennsylvania, and a local speaker to be named. There is no cost, but a free-will offering will be accepted. For more information, contact Marge McGinley at [email protected] or 609-271-8310.

St. Mary of the Lakes School, Medford, will hold a meals marathon from 9 a.m. to noon Jan. 15 in the cafeteria. For questions, contact Linda Xerri at [email protected].

St. Isaac Jogues Parish, Marlton, will host a blanket-making session to comfort those with cancer beginning at 12 noon Jan. 14. The blankets are no-sew fleece made by tying knots. Supplies are limited; sign up by calling Terri at 856-797-0999, ext. 109, or at [email protected].
