Pilgrimage to Czestochowa shrine set for August
July 29, 2019 at 12:37 p.m.
Catholics throughout the region are eagerly anticipating the outpouring of love and peace they will experience during the annual summer pilgrimage to the National Shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa in Doylestown, Pa., this year slated from Aug. 9-12.
The pilgrimage, now in its 31st year, is designed as a four-day, 57-mile trek beginning at Sts. Peter and Paul Parish, Great Meadows, and winding through New Jersey into Pennsylvania. Polish- and English-speaking pilgrims of all ages are led by the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal and experience prayer, reflection, song, Confession and a daily Mass. The penitent set up camp overnight, then rise each morning to continue their journey. The pilgrimage culminates at a Sunday Mass celebrated at the shrine.
Scores of faithful from the Diocese of Trenton participate in the pilgrimage yearly, including members of the Young Adults in Faith, a group from parishes in Monmouth and Ocean counties who regularly gather to explore their Catholic faith in prayer, Bible study, dinners and other events.
One such member, Matthew Marzorati, created a video about last year’s pilgrimage entitled “A Walk of Faith (True Goodness Films), which interviews the Trenton Diocese participants as they share their journeys of faith. (Watch the video at https://www.truegoodnessfilms.com/walkoffaithfilm.)
Father John Large, parochial vicar in St. Theresa Parish, Little Egg Harbor, will be participating in the pilgrimage for the sixth time. His advice to a potential pilgrim?
“Go,” the priest said emphatically. “It’s a time of spiritual renewal, a prayerful walk of four days where you can grow in faith and share with others in context of faith.”
For those who prefer a shorter journey both in time and distance, St. Hedwig Church, Trenton, will organize a group of pilgrims leaving on Aug. 11 and reach the shrine in time for the Aug. 12 Sunday Mass at 2 p.m. For further information, call Agnieszka Chojnowska at 609-356-9381.
