Each year, on the third Sunday of September, the Catholic Church in the United States honors those in catechetical ministry – the essential work of forming children and adults in the Catholic faith – through the celebration of Catechetical Sunday.

Sponsored by the United States Catholic Bishops’ Committee on Evangelization and Catechesis, the theme for this year’s celebration was “Do This In Memory of Me,” encouraging catechists to focus their ministry and their lives on the Eucharist.

Many parishes across the diocese observed this day through special celebrations in which catechists were commissioned for their important work and recognized for responding to the call to share their gifts and to promote knowledge of Catholic teachings.

Among those parishes were St. Joseph, Trenton, where some 30 catechists were commissioned and blessed by Father Javier Diaz, pastor, during Mass. In addition, catechists received certificates for completing Level I of diocesan certification for religious education. Those catechists are currently working on Level II. In addition, six catechists received certificates for Level II, which indicates full diocesan certification.

Ericka Rodriguez, program director of parish religious education, was delighted with the opportunity to acknowledge those who give so much of their time and talent for the good of the whole parish, saying, “I feel very proud of all the catechists and their achievement. St. Joseph Parish is achieving the evangelization of the families through the children.”

St. Aloysius Parish, Jackson, celebrated Catechetical Sunday by blessing catechists present at each Mass. Father Matthew Riedlinger, parochial vicar, expressed gratitude on behalf of the parish for those who undertake such an important ministry. “St. Aloysius parish is very blessed to have 67 catechists who teach our young people the truths of our Catholic faith. These catechists are assisted by 26 aides as well as 15 ‘hall angels’ who monitor the hallways. With over 1,800 students in our religious education program and 359 students in our parochial school, we are very fortunate to be able to touch the lives of so many. As we celebrate Catechetical Sunday, St. Aloysius Parish is grateful to all who dedicate their time, expertise and faith to teaching our young people,” he said.
