A dozen families, including members of Mother of Mercy Parish, Asbury Park, lost their homes Aug. 4 in a blaze that destroyed a two-story building at the Twinbrook Village Apartments in Ocean Township. Several rescue workers were treated for minor injuries; no residents were harmed. The early-afternoon fire on Apollo Street was deemed accidental, apparently starting within vegetation close to the structure.
The American Red Cross provided initial assistance with shelter, food, clothing and other essentials. And some families received additional help from relatives, friends and churches. They included the Hernandez family, who sought assistance from their parish, Mother of Mercy Parish.
The parish responded by raising money through an Aug. 9 food sale following the 11:45 a.m. Spanish Mass at Holy Spirit Church, which is a worship site of Mother of Mercy Parish, said Evelyn Williams, Spanish-language parish secretary and a Hispanic Ministry coordinator.
Williams said the Hernandez family is made up of husband, wife and three children. The food sale was organized by Olga Arias, a parishioner and friend of the Hernandez family.
