The faith community of St. Hedwig Parish, Trenton, is making its final preparations for a special celebration of the parish’s 110th anniversary.
A special dinner banquet will be held Oct. 12 from noon until 7 p.m. in the Ambassador Banquet Hall, at 610 New York Ave., Trenton, following the 11 a.m. Mass.Tickets are being sold after all Masses and at the parish rectory, and the cost to attend is $65 per person.
The parish, located in the heart of Trenton, has long served a significant portion of the Diocese of Trenton’s Polish population. According to the parish website, the faith community bears the namesake of a duchess credited with a number of miracles and healings. Born one of eight children to the count of Andechs – who ruled over the areas now known as Croatia and Dalmatia – Hedwig grew up to see two brothers become bishops and two sisters queens.
As a child, she spent time in the Benedictine monastery of Kitzingen in Franconia, and in 1186, she married Henry the Bearded, prince of Poland and then-future duke of Silesia. Under his wife’s influence, Henry founded the monastery of Cistercian nuns at Trebnitz, the first convent of women in Silesia and the first of many religious establishments founded by the couple.
St. Hedwig Parish traces its roots to the end of the 19th century when the first influx of Polish Americans settled in southern Trenton and attended Mass in St. Stanislaus Church. As the number of Polish immigrants increased in the northern section of Trenton, the need for a new Polish national parish surfaced. In 1904, Bishop James A. McFaul established St. Hedwig and Father John Supinski arrived from Poland to become the founding pastor. He constructed a church/school and rectory. The second pastor, Father Joseph Urban, appealed to have the Felician sisters staff the school. Over the years, subsequent pastors continued to build the parish, adding rooms to the school and renovating other buildings to create a convent. Other pastors who have served the parish include Father Anthony Lechert, Father Julian Zielinski, Msgr. Arthur J. Strenski, Msgr. Martin J. Lipinski, Msgr. Francis Zgliczynski, Father Henry Schabowski, and Father Jacek Labinski, the current pastor.
