With a major milestone on the horizon for May 18, 2019, the parish of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Maple Shade, is stoking the fires of expectation with a series of family events leading up to its 100th anniversary.
Beginning in January, the parish will host a Traveling Madonna, which will continue its journey throughout 2018 and up till the May 2019 anniversary. The Madonna will visit parishioners’ homes, and will include a nine-day novena.
On Jan. 13, to “beat the winter blues,” Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish will host a “Beach Party in January.” The parish hall will be transformed into a family beach-theme party, complete with a summer food extravaganza, dance contest, hula hoops, limbo rock and summer dance music supplied by deejay. Beach tags will be given out to those parishioners interested in taking a break from the cold weather. Participants are invited to wear their favorite summer attire (no bathing suits please).
An International Food and Cultural Festival will take place at the parish on May 19. All parishioners are asked to bring an entrée from their ethnic background, wear their ethnic apparel and display their talents – singing, dancing, musical performance or storytelling.
During the 2018 Christmas season, a Christmas concert is planned. The date is still to be determined; however, arrangements have been made for an internationally recognized choir to participate in the concert.
Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish began as a response to the growing Catholic population of the Maple Shade area, who had previously travelled to Moorestown for all their religious functions. The first Mass for the newly formed parish was celebrated in the silk mill on Stiles Avenue. In October 1920, ground was broken for the first church at 300 Main Street; the first Mass was celebrated in the church in April 1921.
The Sisters of Mercy came from St. Mary Church, Camden, during the 1920s to teach school classes in the church building for grades one through four. In the years that followed, classroom space was added, the convent for the Sisters of St. Joseph was dedicated, and ground was broken for a new and larger worship space that could seat 900. On Nov. 4, 1956, Bishop George W. Ahr dedicated and blessed the new church, which stands today at 236 East Main Street.
