Our Lady of Guadalupe events to be held in Trenton
July 29, 2019 at 12:37 p.m.
Two opportunities for faithful of the Diocese of Trenton to celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe will be held in St. Mary of the Assumption Cathedral, Trenton, this December.
On Dec. 6, Spanish-speaking Catholics from nearly a dozen parishes of the Diocese will unite for an all-day pilgrimage in the Cathedral. Pilgrims are invited to gather in the lower level cafeteria for breakfast at 8 a.m., followed by an 8:45 a.m. procession into the church and Rosary recitation led by Father Rene Pulgarin, pastor of Christ the Redeemer Parish, Mount Holly. Each parish group in the procession will make a special offering to Our Lady during the procession, weaving Hispanic music and dance into the celebration.
Throughout the day-long event, presenters including Father Pulgarin; Deacon Benito Torres of Our Lady of the Angels Parish, Trenton, and Msgr. Joseph Roldan, Cathedral rector, will speak to the pilgrims on the life of Our Lady in Spanish. Children aged two to 10 are invited to attend a separate catechism session.
Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M., plans a visit with families at the Cathedral beginning at 11:45 a.m. before the noon Mass. Praise and worship, a theatrical interpretation of the apparition of the Blessed Mother to Juan Diego, a Holy Hour and bonfire will conclude the pilgrimage at about 5:30 p.m.
The Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe celebrates the appearance of the Blessed Virgin to Mexican peasant Juan Diego on a hillside in December, 1531, to ask that a church in her honor be built at that site. Juan Diego petitioned the Archbishop of Mexico City, who asked for proof of her identity; in answer, Mary left roses in the winter and her imprint upon Juan Diego’s cloak.
The diocesan Office of Worship is also partnering with St. Mary of the Assumption Cathedral for a Mass to be held Dec. 12 at 7 p.m. to mark the end of its annual 24-hour celebration of the feast. Bishop O’Connell will serve as principal celebrant of the multi-cultural celebration which this year has an Aztec theme. Flags from Hispanic nations will be part of the procession, and all are encouraged to wear the festive garb of their native land.
For further information on the Dec. 6 pilgrimage, contact Carrie Barillas, diocesan coordinator of young adult and Hispanic marriage and family life ministries, at [email protected], or 609-403-7175. For further information on the Dec. 12 Mass, contact Carolyn Norbut in the Office of Worship at [email protected] or 609-403-7171. St. Mary of the Assumption Cathedral is located at 149 N. Warren Street, Trenton.
