The sounds of unbridled joy rattled the walls of the Our Lady of Good Counsel School gymnasium as the student body gathered Nov. 20 for a Blue Ribbon School award pep rally. The Moorestown Catholic school was one of two in the Diocese of Trenton to be designated 2015 Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence Sept. 29 by the United States Department of Education and the Council for American Private Education.

Blue and white were the prevailing colors, from the pom-poms each cheering student shook vigorously to the blue t-shirts each wore over their school uniforms. “It’s not just the test scores, it’s everything you do together as a school and community,” Dr. Frank X. McAneny, OLGC principal, told the students and staff. “When you leave or graduate or go into the work world, the blue ribbon is yours forever.”
JoAnn Tier, diocesan moderator for the Office of Catholic Education and superintendent of Catholic Schools, reminded the group that, to win a Blue Ribbon designation, they had scored in the top 15 percent in the nation in language arts and mathematics. “It’s phenomenal. This will guide you in learning and invite you to realize your potential,” Tier said. “You are formed in your faith, committed to personal growth and pride in who you are. Students, you made it happen. This is an atmosphere of inquiry and wonder.”
Dr. McAneny presented pins and carnations to past and present teachers, school board members, Our Lady of Good Counsel parish and school staff, including former principal Jerome T. McGowan and pastor Father Damian McElroy. U.S. Congressman Tom MacArthur presented the school with a certificate and the American flag which had flown over the U.S. Capitol Sept. 30, the day of the Blue Ribbon announcement by Secretary of Education Arne Duncan.
The assembly watched a video clip of Secretary Duncan’s announcement about the Blue Ribbon schools, then heartily sang the OLGC school song which proclaimed, “We are all connected… we are part of it all.”
