Novena, Masses to celebrate CAMM's 100th year
July 29, 2019 at 12:37 p.m.
As part of its 100th year anniversary celebration and its annual November observance of the Miraculous Medal, the Central Association of the Miraculous Medal (CAMM) will hold a Solemn Novena Nov. 16-24 and a Feast Day Mass Nov. 25 at 10 a.m. at the Miraculous Medal Shrine, 500 E. Chelten Ave., Philadelphia.
Cardinal Timothy Dolan, Archbishop of New York, will be the special guest celebrant and preacher at a Nov. 18 Mass at 7 p.m. in the shrine. Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M., will be the principal celebrant and homilist at the Nov. 25 Feast Day Mass at 10 a.m. Many additional services will be available at the shrine during the nine days of prayer, with the shrine’s associate director, Vincentian Father Michael J. Shea, designated as preacher.
As a Vincentian priest, Bishop O’Connell has a special connection with the shrine, which was inspired by priests of Congregation of the Mission, formed by St. Vincent de Paul.
Vincentian Father Joseph A. Skelly had a devotion to Mary under the title of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal, which began when his mother placed a medal around his neck just before he entered the seminary. Years later he spread his devotion by placing a Miraculous Medal in each appeal letter for funds for a new seminary in Princeton. When such a generous response was received, Father Skelly and others believed special recognition of Our Lady was in order, and he responded by founding CAMM in 1915.
In 1927 Father Skelly had “Mary’s Central Shrine” built, and he introduced a nine-day Novena four times a year – November (Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal), February (Our Lady of Lourdes, May (Our Lady, Help of Christians, and August (Feast of the Assumption).
Originally CAMM was formed to encourage devotion to Mary under her title of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal. Today the association also supports the formation and education of Vincentian seminaries, providing care to the aged and infirm Vincentians of the Eastern Province and for supporting programs that provide assistance to the poor.
