Recently students in the fifth grade class in St. Raphael School, Hamilton, dissected owl pellets – the undigested prey consumed by an owl, usually consisting of teeth, bones, claws, feathers and fur, compressed in the gizzard and stored in a pouch in the stomach. The pellet is ejected by the owl through its mouth. In this “hands-on” learning experience, the pellets were dissected to reveal the bones and teeth of the prey, before students identified and categorized their findings.
