New focus and faces for diocesan temporal, financial administration

From staff reports

Parish leadership and other members of the diocesan community who regularly deal with Chancery personnel will soon be introduced to newly named directors and a revamped organizational structure in the areas of administration and finance.

A reshuffling of roles and responsibilities and the filling of vacant posts became necessary following the June 30 retirements of several key staffers, including Anthony J. Mingarino, chief administrative officer and chancellor.

As reported in the June 29 issue of The Monitor, the work that had been conducted by the former Office of Temporal and Financial Administration, which Mingarino headed for some 14 years, has now been assigned to two different offices – the Office of Temporal Administration, directed by Joseph Bianchi, diocesan chief administrative officer, and the Office of Financial Administration, directed by Kevin Cimei, diocesan chief financial officer.

Under the Office of Temporal Administration, Bianchi will oversee the newly created Department of Risk Management, with Joe Cahill as director, and the Department of Human Resources, with Angela Gitto as director. Bianchi will continue to serve as executive director of the Office of Child and Youth Protection.

Under the Office of Financial Administration, Cimei will oversee the Departments of Computer Services, under the direction of Anthony DeLorenzo; Development, with Steve Nicholl continuing as director; Finance, with director Carolynn Thompson replacing Daryl Rowe; Catholic Cemeteries, with Mark Wilson as director, and Construction and Real Estate Commission and Building Management (Chancery) with Scot Pirozzi as director.

Prior to July 1, the Departments of Computer Services, Catholic Cemeteries, Development, Finance and former Property and Construction all operated under the Office of Temporal Affairs.

Following are profiles on the Chancery’s newly named directors. To reach any of the directors or to learn more about the work of the Diocese of Trenton, visit www.dioceseoftrenton.org.

Joe Cahill

With a diverse background in business management and the chemical industry, Joe Cahill is well-suited to serve as director of the Diocese’s newly created Department of Risk Management.

The Aberdeen resident has 35 years of experience working for several specialty chemical manufacturing companies, 25 years of which were in senior management positions. After leaving chemical industry work in 2010, he became an independent business management consultant with occasional work in the chemical industry doing project work on global market segment analysis.

Cahill’s work with the Diocese began in 2012 as a consultant for various projects. In December of that year, he became part of the Hurricane Sandy Restoration Team for the Diocese as the liaison to FEMA, assisting in the cleanup and repair of parishes and schools that were impacted by the storm, mostly in Monmouth and Ocean Counties. In 2016, he was hired as associate director for risk management within the former Department of Administrative Services.

Areas of risk management that Cahill addresses include workers’ compensation; property and casualty; automobile insurance, and excess liability, as well as making certain that the Diocese’s various buildings are properly insured.

Cyber liability is another area Cahill oversees, noting that it’s his job to “manage our exposure to cyber risk through the use of hardware and software to protect the Chancery, parishes and schools.” Cahill is also a member of the team working with child protection and safe environment issues.

Cahill attends St. Clement Parish, Matawan, where he has been a member of the parish finance council for 12 years. He also serves his parish as an usher, and he recently retired as director of altar servers after 13 years. He is also the financial secretary of the Cardinal Neumann Council, Knights of Columbus.

Cahill and his wife, Holly, are the parents of twin sons, Tim and John, and daughter, Mary.

Anthony DeLorenzo

Taking on the position of director of the diocesan Department of Computer Services should be a smooth transition for Anthony DeLorenzo, since many of the skills and knowledge he’s acquired about the Diocese’s technological infrastructure comes from his past 12 years in the department as associate director.

When DeLorenzo first started at the Chancery, he was involved with addressing the various offices and their technology needs and working with technology partners in updating and modernizing the overall information systems. He also helped with manning the Chancery’s help desk, meeting the technological needs of the Chancery’s staff.

As department director, DeLorenzo works with his staff in maintaining the administration of the Chancery network, assisting parishes with implementing the Parish Soft program and providing a “customer service-oriented support for Chancery offices and ministries.”

DeLorenzo holds an associate’s degree in computer operations and networking from Mercer County College and a bachelor of arts degree in computer management and information systems from Holy Family University, Philadelphia. He previously worked as technology coordinator in St. Anthony School and then McCorristin Catholic High School, Hamilton, and as a junior network administrator for Jenkins Law Library in Philadelphia.

He is a resident of Columbus and member of St. Mary Parish, Bordentown.

 Angela Gitto

After working more than 11 years as associate director of human resources in the Department of Administrative Services, Angela Gitto begins her new role as director of the newly-established Department of Human Resources.

As director, she will continue to assist the Diocese’s parishes, schools and agencies with their hiring and employee relations needs. While working for the Diocese, Angela has been busy developing policies and procedures for human resources; creating and delivering training programs that benefit the more than 5,000 employees of the Diocese and its parishes and schools, and working individually with pastors, principals and business managers regarding specific human resource needs.

Before coming to the Diocese in October 2005, Angela was a vice president for Emigrant Savings Bank in New York City, where she worked for more than 18 years in various positions including human resources, training and development and finally as an IT manager of the bank’s help desk and hardware support group.

Angela holds a bachelor’s degree in business management from St. John’s University. The mother of two sons, she lives in Manalapan, where she is a member of St. Thomas More Parish.

Carolynn Thompson

With 20 years’ experience working in a hospital setting as a healthcare accountant, Carolynn Thompson never thought she would switch gears and work for the Catholic Church.

And what she finds most ironic is that her career path led her to work not just for one Diocese, but two.

Prior to her July 1 start as the Diocese’s new director of finance, Thompson had been employed by the Diocese of Camden for 14 years where she was first appointed assistant comptroller and coordinator of parish review and support, and later was promoted to director of budget and financial liaison for parishes and schools.

In the Department of Finance, Thompson works in collaboration with the Diocesan Finance Council, holds membership on the Diocesan Budget Committee, Building Commission, Investment Committee and assists and supports all major financial decisions facing the Diocese.

Grateful for her hard-working staff, Thompson now looks forward to familiarizing herself with the Diocese’s parishes, schools and ministries and having her office be of assistance in any way possible.

Thompson holds an undergraduate degree in business administration with a concentration in accounting from Rutgers University, and a master’s degree in Church management from Villanova University, Villanova, Pa. She is a member of St. Charles Borromeo Parish, Sicklerville, and resides in Blackwood with her husband, Don, her mother Madeleine Mazza, and two dogs.
