Neptune parish presents St. Maximilian Kolbe play

July 29, 2019 at 12:37 p.m.

Well-known actor and producer Leonardo Defilippis will bring his acclaimed one-man drama on the life and sacrifice of St. Maximilian Kolbe to Holy Innocents Parish, Neptune, Sept. 8 at 7:30 p.m.

Defilippis, who has frequently appeared in parishes throughout the diocese in his theatrical presentations on the lives of saints, is touring New Jersey with “Maximilian: Saint of Auschwitz” an inspiring portrayal of the Franciscan who stood up against the forces of Nazism.

The story of how St. Maximilian Kolbe came to be a prisoner at the Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland during World War II, endured slave labor there and came forward to sacrifice his life in place of a married man, is captured in this presentation.

Critics have called the one-man performance a riveting production that highlights the actors’ ability to switch characters and costumes with amazing dexterity. As is the case in many of his productions, this includes special effects that include a majestic orchestral soundtrack, professional lighting and a video backdrop that sets the story in a historical context that is relevant to today.

In interviews, Defilippis has called St. Maximilian a much-needed hero for these “exciting and challenging times…We need heroes to show us the way we should live in an increasingly secular world.”

Best known for directing and starring in the feature film, “Therese” a film on the life of St. Therese of Lisieux which had a year-long run in theaters around the country, he is the founder and president of Saint Luke Productions.

For more than 31 years, the company has produced numerous one-man and one-woman plays on the lives of saints and the Gospels and has created feature films, television and radio/internet programming, including the popular “Benedictus Moments” which is broadcast daily.

His live production of “Vianney” which captured the life of Saint John Vianney, toured the country in 2009-2010, the Year for Priests and made several stops in the Trenton Diocese. Aside from New Jersey, this production of “Maximilian: Saint of Auschwitz” will also be touring in New York, Illinois, Missouri, South Dakota, Nebraska and a number of other states.

The production runs 90 minutes and is suitable for audiences ages 10 and up. Admission is a free-will offering with a suggestion of $10 per ticket at the door. For more information, call Brenda at 732-922-4242 x25 or visit www.holyinnocentschurch.com.
