Msgr. John Nevin Kennedy, served in Trenton, Metuchen Dioceses

Msgr. John Nevin Kennedy, a priest who served in both the Trenton and Metuchen Dioceses, died June 27. He was 82.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated July 2 in Immaculate Conception Church, Somerville, where he had served as pastor from 1985 until his retirement in 2002.

Son of the late John and Marie Kennedy, Msgr. Kennedy was ordained a priest in 1958 in St. Anthony Church, Trenton. His first assignment as a priest was as parochial vicar of Immaculate Conception Church. He then went on to serve in parishes in both the Trenton and Metuchen Dioceses including Holy Spirit, Perth Amboy; St. Raphael, Hamilton, and Our Lady Star of the Sea, Long Branch. As pastor, he served in Blessed Sacrament Parish, Martinsville, and then as pastor of Immaculate Conception.

In 1996 he was named a Prelate of Honor with the title of Reverend Monsignor by Pope John Paul II.

He was a strong supporter of the Catholic Youth Organization and his strong involvement in the Right to Life Movement led him to establish Great Expectations, a home for unwed mothers.

In addition to his parents, Msgr. Kennedy was predeceased by a sister and sister-in-law. He is survived by another sister, a brother, eight nieces and nephews and 14 great nieces and great nephews.

Interment was in Immaculate Conception Seminary, Somerville.
