Msgr. Armando Perini, served Trenton, Metuchen dioceses

Msgr. Armando Perini, a priest of the Metuchen Diocese, who had previously served in the Trenton Diocese, died April 1 in Florida at age 86.
His funeral Mass will be celebrated April 26 at 11 a.m. in St. Mary Church, Alpha. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. In addition, two parishes where Msgr. Perini had ministered have scheduled Memorial Masses.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated April 17, 11 a.m., in St. Lucy Church, 118 7th Ave., Newark, and May 26 at 7 p.m. in St. Helena Church, 950 Grove Ave., Edison. Msgr. Perini had served as pastor of St. Helena for 36 years.
Father Anthony Sirianni, a current pastor of St. Helena Parish, noted that the May 26 date for Msgr. Perini’s Memorial Mass was chosen as it would have been his 60th anniversary of priestly ordination.
Born April 3, 1930, in Alpha to Gino and Maria Perini, Msgr. Perini attended Alpha Public Grammar School and Phillipsburg High School; during middle school, strongly influenced by the faith he witnessed at home, he began considering a vocation to the priesthood. Following high school, he attended St. Charles Seminary and College, Catonsville, Md., and Immaculate Conception Seminary, Mahwah. He was ordained May 26, 1956, in St. Anthony Church, Trenton, by Bishop George W. Ahr.
Over the course of his priestly ministry, Msgr. Perini served in St. Ann Parish, Browns Mills; St. Paul Parish, Princeton; St. Joachim Parish, Trenton; St. Ann Parish, Raritan Borough; St. Joseph Parish, Keyport; and St. Philip and St. James Parish, Phillipsburg. During his ministry at St. Paul’s and St. Ann’s, he oversaw the construction of each parish’s church, rectory and convent.
In 1972, Msgr. Perini was appointed pastor of St. Helena Parish, Edison, serving there for 36 years. During that time he made improvements to the church and oversaw construction of science, art, music and pre-K classrooms in St. Helena School, as well as enlarging the school library. A staunch advocate for the poor, Msgr. Perini began a special collection at St. Helena Parish for the poor, contributing significantly to the Diocese of Metuchen’s Catholic Relief Services Operation Rice Bowl.
Upon retirement in 2008, Msgr. Perini resided in Florida and Pennsylvania. Upon moving to Maria Regina Residence, he continued to serve the Newark Archdiocese as a weekend assistant in St. Lucy Parish.
Msgr. Perini is survived by two brothers and sisters-in-law and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
