Mother's Day Tea a special gift of thanks and fun

If there is one event that every mother cherishes from her child’s preschool days in Holy Cross School, Rumson, it is the Mother’s Day Tea. There are few memories more poignant or special than when a child says “Thank you” to his or her mother for all she does.

Each year, four preschool classes spare no effort in creating a perfectly elegant tea in honor of Mother’s Day. The children spend all week baking cookies and brownies, mixing iced tea, and preparing cucumber sandwiches for the celebration. Teachers Jill Fulton, preschool director, along with Jeanne Marie Donahue, Mary Sue O’Brien and Jennifer Tracy and their assistants teach the students how to escort their mother on their arm, to pull out her chair and place a napkin gently on her lap.

The classes spend weeks creating beautifully unique gifts for their mothers, including hand-made “pearl” necklaces and hand-painted teacups. The children lovingly present each gift to their mothers and entertain them with songs. On the morning of the tea, each classroom is transformed into a café with color-coordinating tablecloths and spring flowers.
