Mother Teresa Regional plans summer of learning

While classes might not be in session during the summer months, teachers at Mother Teresa Regional School, Atlantic Highlands, will be working to provide students with some intellectual stimulation.
The 2013 Summer Scholars Program, with workshops and camp sessions running from July through August, features offerings for students ranging from the kindergarten to eighth grade.
“I think it benefits the children because it keeps them actively engaged in learning all summer, as opposed to a long break of not doing math, or not doing science class,” said school principal, Melissa Whelan Wisk. “But it is also much more of a hands-on and integrated approach, which helps with the learning lasting.”
Each program is designed to help students learn in a safe and fun environment during their summer vacation, with a variety of academic, creative and physical fitness classes for kids to choose from. Topics include everything from computer fun to drama, baking to cheerleading. And don’t forget the “Indiana Jones Archaeology” workshop or the “Famous Battles” class.
Wisk said that sometimes the learning is somewhat hidden from students, as in the case of baking cupcakes – doubling a recipe involves using math, but the hands-on approach and the fun of baking tasty treats masks the learning behind it while reinforcing lessons learned in class throughout the year.
Registration is $90 for each weeklong class, with offerings both in the morning and afternoon.
