Monitor readers help solve mystery photo
July 29, 2019 at 12:37 p.m.
This photo of Bishop George W. Ahr (1950-1979) and an unidentified woman at a commencement ceremony was wrapped in mystery until readers of The Monitor were able to lend their knowledge.
Staff could not confirm who this woman was and why she was photographed with Bishop Ahr and so, turned to our print edition readers and followers on social media for help.
After an overwhelming amount of responses in our e-mail inboxes and many comments on our social media pages, the mystery is solved. The woman pictured with Bishop Ahr is the late, Oscar-winning actress Loretta Young. Young received an honorary degree from Georgian Court College (now University), Lakewood, in 1975, when she was honored alongside two others for humanitarian efforts. Young was a devout Catholic her whole life.
The Monitor would like to extend a special thanks to Maria Dolan and Sister of Mercy Dorothy Lazarick for the detailed information that helped lead to the correct answer. This photo is featured in an exhibit on the history of the Diocese of Trenton, running until Dec. 7 in the Aquinas Institute, Princeton. To visit the exhibit, call 814-381-9322 to make a reservation, or email [email protected].
