Mercy Sister Ruth Mary Holland, 88

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated July 17 in McAuley Hall Health Care Center, Watchung, for Mercy Sister Ruth Mary Holland who died July 13 in Overlook Hospital, Summit. She was 88.

Sister Mary Ruth (former Sister Mary Nativitas) was born and raised in Trenton. She attended Cathedral High School where she was a star player on the basketball team.

She entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1940. She received a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Georgian Court College, Lakewood.

Through the years, Sister Ruth Mary ministered in the Dioceses of Trenton, Camden and Metuchen. In the Trenton Diocese, she taught in St. Joseph School, Keyport, and St. Paul School, Princeton.

When she retired to McAuley Hall Health Care Center in Watchung, she continued her ministry of prayer and hospitality.

Sister Ruth Mary was predeceased by her brothers Joseph S. and Arthur J. Holland and half-brother, Edward Atwood. She is survived by her sister-inlaw, Elizabeth Holland, several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, and also many Sisters of Mercy in the Mid-Atlantic community.

Burial was in Holy Redeemer Cemetery, South Plainfield.

Memorial contributions may be made to Sisters of Mercy, Mid-Atlantic Community, Mount St. Mary, 1645 Highway 22, Watchung, N.J. 07069.
