Mercer County CYO receives grant from Borden Foundation

The Mercer County Catholic Youth Organization recently received a $10,000 grant award from The Mary Owen Borden Foundation for its pre-school, after school and summer camp programs at CYO’s East State Street Center.
CYO took over operation of ESSC (formerly Martin House Learning Center) in August, 2012, in the Wilbur section of Trenton, one of the poorest neighborhoods in the city. All CYO programs are operated through a combination of public and private funding sources, relying heavily on public subsidies where possible.
Since taking over ESSC, CYO learned many area families could not meet public subsidy income/employment eligibility standards, requiring more private funds to keep these essential programs affordable for neighborhood families. The Borden Foundation grant monies will be used to support these programs.
“We are thrilled to be initiating a relationship with the Borden Foundation,” said Tom Mladenetz, CYO’s executive director. “As long-time supporters of Martin House, they understand the challenges facing the community and that there are many families who don’t qualify for publicly supported childcare programs. Through private partnerships like this one, CYO’s programs can help all children, regardless of public funding limitations. We thank the Borden Foundation for stepping up and encourage other entities to do likewise.”
