Lakewood, Brick music ministries will mark patron saint's feast day

July 29, 2019 at 12:37 p.m.

The feast of St. Cecilia, patron saint of music, will reach a high note Nov. 18 when the parish music ministries of St. Mary of the Lake, Lakewood, St. Anthony Claret, Lakewood, and Visitation, Brick, come together for a celebration complete with live music, food and games for people of all ages. The celebration, which is free of charge, will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the gym of Holy Family Church, 1143 East County Line Road, Lakewood.

According to Cori Scotti, music minister in St. Mary of the Lake Parish, the bilingual event will showcase the skills of the various choirs from the three parishes, including the more than five choirs from St. Anthony Claret Parish.

One highlight that will take place at the day’s conclusion, Scotti mentioned, will be the American Idol-like “sing-off” for “our young aspiring talented singers“ in which they  will receive a prize based by audience applause.

Along with the music component, Scotti  said the afternoon will feature  participation by other parish ministries, such as the pro-life group from St. Anthony Claret Parish in which members will sell food to support various pro-life activities. The Knights of Columbus council and St. Vincent de Paul conference from St. Mary of the Lake Parish will be in attendance as well as representatives from other organizations from the three parishes. In between music presentations will be music-related educational games  and a video on the life of St. Cecilia will be shown.

After acknowledging how the three parish music ministries have enjoyed collaborating on previous projects, Scotti extended appreciation to fellow music directors, Ismael Riveria of St. Anthony Claret Parish, and Natalya Bencivenga of Visitation Parish who have not only proved to be competent and wonderful  musicians but wonderful friends and colleagues as well. She also spoke of being grateful to pastors, Father Michael Sullivan, Father Pedro Bou and Father Edward Blanchett who have “encouraged us to build community morale and developing a relationship with our neighboring parishes.”

“This is an open event for anyone in the surrounding communities to enjoy,” Scotti said, then added the next event is planned for 3 p.m. Dec. 17 when the choirs from St. Mary of the Lake and Visitation Parishes will present a combined concert in Visitation Parish.
