Knights of Columbus select CCD Teacher of the Year at annual convention

Robert A. DeLuca, a parishioner at St. John Parish, Allentown, was selected as the 2013 CCD Teacher of the Year at the Knights of Columbus Annual Convention in Wildwood May 17. De-Luca was awarded a plaque by Dr. Daniel Rossi, Knights of Columbus N.J. State Deputy, and Supreme Advocate and guest speaker John Marrella of the Knights’ New Haven, Conn. headquarters during the annual two-day convention which draws Knights from all five dioceses in New Jersey to the seaside resort town.

DeLuca has taught religious instruction to eighth grade Confirmation candidates at his parish for 12 years; many of his former students have returned to serve as aides to the younger classes. He has led the youth in many parish and community outreach projects such as the “Loaves and Fishes Project to Feed the Hungry” distribution of box lunches to area poor; the pasta supper and auction which raises funds for Catholic Charities; and the St. John feast day picnic. De-Luca also was instrumental in the creation of the parish’s youth group known as “IGNITE-Catch a Fire for God”.

DeLuca is a fourth degree Knight of Columbus and serves on the board of directors of the Visitation Home, a Catholic shared living residence for people with developmental disabilities. The full-time pharmaceutical representative coaches in the Hamilton Little League Baseball program and with a local youth basketball team.

He and his wife Sharon are extraordinary ministers of holy Communion, assist with the parish Valentine’s Dance, and have served for 10 years on the Pre-Cana team, speaking with engaged couples about personal finance.

In addition to DeLuca’s designation as CCD teacher of the year, a number of Trenton Diocesan councils were recognized with service awards at the convention. St. Mary of the Lakes Council, Knights of Columbus, Medford, was recognized with the youth and pro-life activities awards, while councils based at Our Lady of Sorrows-St. Anthony, Hamilton; St. Mary, Bordentown; and St. Alphonse, Hopewell, were awarded the Seminarian Letter Project Appreciation awards.
