Jane Magovern, art teacher for 40 years in Belmar school

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated April 21 in St. Rose Church, Belmar, for Jane Magovern, who taught in St. Rose Grammar School, for 40 years.

Mrs. Magovern, originally from Spring Lake, moved to Belmar in 1974. She graduated from St. Catharine School, Spring Lake, and St. Rose High School, Belmar. She earned a bachelor of arts degree from Caldwell College, Caldwell. Following her college graduation, she joined the faculty of St. Rose Grammar School, where she taught art for 40 years.

In 2001, Mrs. Magovern was selected the Belmar Citizen of the Year, and in 2004, she was honored to serve as the Deputy Grand Marshall of the Belmar St. Patrick’s Day Parade. She was also named the Teacher of the Year in 1997 by the Diocese, and was recognized as a 20-year volunteer  in Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune.

Mrs. Magovern was the director of Belmar’s summer arts and crafts program for 25 years and managed the children’s tent at the Belmar Seafood Festival since its inception. While in St. Rose Grammar School, she coached both boys’ and girls’ track and cross-country teams, girls’ cheerleading and girls’ basketball. For many years, she also coached girls’ recreation basketball in Belmar.

Mrs. Magovern is survived by her husband, Brian; two daughters, Meghann (Peter) Marturano and Colleen (Michael) Mangan; four grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law; a sister and brother-in-law; other brothers and sisters-in-law; nieces, nephews and cousins.

Entombment was in St. Anne Cemetery/Mausoleum, Wall Township.

Memorial donations may be made to the Jane Magovern Art Scholarship, P.O. Box 141, Belmar, N.J. 07719, in which proceeds will benefit St. Rose Grammar School.
