In retirement, Father McGovern served in Spring Lake, Sea Girt parishes

Bishop Dominic Marconi, retired auxiliary bishop of Newark, was principal celebrant of a Mass of Christian Burial Jan. 29 in St. Michael Church, Cranford, for Father John P. McGovern who died Jan. 21.

Father McGovern was a priest of the Archdiocese of Newark and pastor emeritus of St. Michael Parish. In his retirement years he lived in Wall Township and had ministered in St. Mark Parish, Sea Girt, and St. Catharine-St. Margaret Parish, Spring Lake.

Born in Jersey City, Father McGovern was the son of Bernard and Margaret McGovern. He was a graduate of St. Peter’s Prep and Seton Hall University, South Orange, and held a master’s degree in Fordham University, N.Y., and a master of divinity degree from Immaculate Conception Seminary, South Orange.

Father McGovern was ordained a priest May 9, 1965, and he served in various ministries in the Archdiocese of Newark including as associate pastor; chaplain of the Summit Police Department and the Cranford Police and Fire Departments; chair of the religion department and as pastor of Ascension Parish, New Milford, as well as St. Michael. He retired in 2011.

He is survived by a brother, sister-in-law, nephews and grand-nephews. Burial was in St. Teresa Cemetery, Summit. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
