Hospice care gives supportive care to people in the final phase of a terminal illness while focusing on comfort and quality of life. Advanced methods of pain control may be used to ensure the patient is made comfortable and free of pain. Hospice programs are usually home-based, but services can be provided away from home in nursing homes, private facilities or within hospitals. Treating the whole person by providing support for the patient’s emotional, social, and spiritual needs along with medical symptoms is the philosophy of hospice.
